How to Reset the Instagram Algorithm When Your Feed Needs a Fresh Start
Instagram has launched a way for users to hit the reset button on their Instagram algorithm – completely clear the feed on their home page, Reels, and Explore channels.
As a Type A perfectionist, few things bring me greater satisfaction than a good old-fashioned spring cleaning. When the season changes, I’m always overcome with the urge to declutter drawers, clean out closets, and reorganize shelves.
Doing this is certainly a bit of work, but that feeling you get after a thorough clean? It’s worth every second spent sorting through piles of old clothes on the bedroom floor.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could do the same with our online spaces?
(You’re starting to see where I’m going with this.) As it turns out, you can – at least on Instagram. And unlike spring cleaning, it won’t hurt your back.

In November 2025, the social media platform quietly launched a way for users to hit the reset button on the Instagram algorithm – completely clear their home pages, Reels, and Explore channels.
Instagram rolled out this feature with teenagers in mind (more on that below), but frankly, it’s a wildly underappreciated new tool for anyone who wants to refresh their social media experience without having to start from scratch with a new account.
Here’s everything you need to know about this useful feature. Goodbye, algorithmic spiral of sad late-night doom-scrolling. It’s time for a fresh start.

What Exactly Does Resetting the Instagram Algorithm Mean?
Resetting the Instagram algorithm is a feature that allows you to clear recommended content across Explore, Reels, and Channels services and start fresh.
To understand this feature, it’s helpful to know something about how the Instagram algorithm works. Throughout your time on the platform, you’ve given Instagram hundreds of thousands of signals about what content you want to see more often. Likes, comments, and shares are obvious, but even subtle, passive signals can shape your feed. Take, for example, the time spent watching shocking video content that you just can’t look away from – all these small moments can add up.
At best, your channels may stop being useful for the life situation you’re in (for example, videos about wedding dresses that appear even after your wedding). At worst, you may find that your feed is filled with videos that trigger or upset you.
Resetting the algorithm is therefore not just about cleaning up your feed. It’s about taking control of your Instagram experience. I argue that this is a much-needed feature, because the platform is increasingly moving toward recommended content instead of content from family and friends – and it incredibly helps protect your mental health.
As Instagram says, it wants to give users “new ways to shape your Instagram experience, so it can continue to reflect your passions and interests as they evolve”.
Why would you want to reset your algorithm?
There are plenty of reasons why you might want to hit the reset button:
- Your interests have changed (goodbye sourdough!)
- You’re getting too much content about sensitive topics, which can cause you problems.
- You’re tired of the same types of posts.
- You accidentally fell down a rabbit hole with content that you’re not actually interested in
- You want to discover new creators and new perspectives
The reset feature was developed as part of evolving account protection for teenagers, which Instagram wants to help develop “safe, positive, and age-appropriate experiences”.
As mentioned, the content reset feature is available to all users who feel that their feeds no longer reflect who they are.
How to Reset Your Instagram Algorithm in 5 Steps
Are you ready for a fresh start? Here’s how to refresh your Instagram recommendations:
- On your profile, tap the three-line “More options” icon in the top right.
- Scroll down to “What you see” and tap “Content preferences”.
- Tap “Reset suggested content”.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and tap “Next”.
- Tap “Reset suggested content” to confirm

Pro tip: Before completing the refresh (in step 5 above), Instagram will give you the option to review the accounts you follow.
If you’re not sure you want to do a full refresh and would rather unfollow some accounts or add other advertising topics, you can do that here too.
What Happens After You Reset Your Instagram Algorithm?
Once you hit the reset button, your recommendations start with a clean slate. However, this doesn’t mean your feeds will be empty. Instagram will offer you a mix of content you can explore in your Explore, Reels, and other recommended feeds.
Once you interact with content by liking, sharing, or engaging with it, Instagram will begin personalizing your recommendations again based on these new signals.
It’s worth noting what the reset doesn’t change:
- The accounts you follow (unless you manually unfollow them during the review process).
- Displayed ads
- Your existing posts, stories, or direct messages
Here’s a helpful way to think about it: imagine you’re moving to a new neighborhood and keeping all your furniture and friends.
Other Ways to Change Your Instagram Experience
If you’re not ready for a complete reset, Instagram still has plenty of tools to help you better manage your feeds.
Here are a few other features you might want to try:
- For posts you want to see more often, tap the “Interested” option (you’ll find this option by tapping the three dots on the post).
- For content you’d rather skip, select the “Not interested” option (like above, you’ll find this option by tapping the three dots on the post in feeds). Note that these options are only available on your reels and explore feeds.

- Using hidden words you can filter posts with certain phrases (you’ll find them in the same menu above, but in the “How others can contact you” section).

- To view posts in chronological order, switch to your Following feed (you can switch by tapping the Instagram logo on your home feed).

- Create a favorites list so you can prioritize content from accounts you love (you’ll find it in the same menu above, also in the “What you see” section).

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Will I have to follow accounts again after the reset? No, resetting the algorithm won’t affect the accounts you already follow unless you manually unfollow them during the process.
Will resetting affect my posts or messages? No, your existing posts, stories, or direct messages will not change with the reset.
Will the ads Instagram shows me disappear? No, the reset has no effect on the ads you see.
How long will it take for Instagram to understand my new preferences? The first few days after the reset are key. The more actively you engage with content you’re interested in, the faster Instagram will adapt its recommendations to your new interests.
How often can I reset the algorithm? Currently, there’s no official limit to resetting the algorithm, but it’s recommended to only perform a reset when you feel your feed no longer reflects your actual interests.
What should I do if resetting isn’t enough? If you’re still seeing content you’re not interested in, use the “Not interested” or “Interested” options directly on individual posts to help Instagram better understand your preferences.
Ready for a Reset?
Let me return to my spring cleaning comparison: you know how when you’re clearing out your closet, you rediscover clothes you love and haven’t worn in a while, or you make space for a new style you want to try.
It’s a little like that. Sometimes you don’t know what you need until you take stock of what you have.
Still, you need to be intentional about how you engage after the refresh. Those first few days after the reset are crucial for training the algorithm on what you actually want to see. Pay attention to what you like, what you comment on, and how much time you spend viewing certain types of content.
