How to Get Verified on TikTok: Step-by-Step Guide

As a content creator and marketer, I often see creators and brands demanding a verification checkmark on TikTok – and I understand their enthusiasm. Being verified on TikTok is like getting a golden ticket to the chocolate factory.

It appears exclusive and rare, which means you stand out from the crowd. And given that video-focused apps are predicted to be among TikTok’s peers in 2024, standing out will be key.

The blue checkmark on TikTok doesn’t mean you’ll automatically enter the world of celebrities and walk the red carpet. However, I can assure you that it looks good on your brand and is a great step toward growing your platform.

But how do you get verified on TikTok? Actually, it’s a bit easier than you might think. Here’s how to get verified on TikTok, along with a few tips I’ve picked up from endless scrolling in the app.

What Does TikTok Verification Mean?

TikTok verification essentially means that the account is verified to belong to the person or brand it represents.

You’ve probably noticed that your favorite brands, musicians, creators, and public figures have a blue checkmark next to their username. The checkmark means it’s their real account and you’re following the right person.

Why Is TikTok Verification Important?

Let’s be honest: it’s somewhat of a status symbol. Verification on TikTok lets your followers know you’re not some scammer – but it also lets others know you’re worth following.

Think about it: TikTok users will see your verified profile and think: “This person is so important that people want additional assurance that it’s really them, not some bot or scammer.” This is very important to TikTok users. It gives your platform legitimacy and a slight sense of exclusivity.

I myself can admit that my interest in some creators was sparked by the appearance of the blue checkmark.

Beyond status, the verification badge also builds trust with your followers and creates authority in specific topics or industries on the platform.

For example, entertainment journalist Mona Kosar Abdi is verified on TikTok, so her followers know that the news they receive comes from a legitimate and reliable source.

So how do you get verified on TikTok? Let’s dive in.

How to Get Verified on TikTok

In 2022, TikTok allowed users to request verification. Until then, it was up to the secretive company behind the scenes to find creators and verify them as a reward for creating popular and quality content.

Okay, it wasn’t a secret society – just TikTok employees. Still, this process seemed to be shrouded in mystery, and for creators it was always a pleasant surprise when they logged in and saw that bright blue checkmark.

Today, creators can fill out a simple verification application, although the app still reserves the right to select or reject someone for verification.

Here’s how to apply:

  1. Open the TikTok app and click on Profile in the bottom right corner.
  2. Click on the menu in the top right corner (three horizontal lines).
  3. Click on Settings and Privacy.
  4. Tap on Account.
  5. Tap on Verification.

To be eligible for verification, you must meet three basic requirements:

  • Have a username, bio, and profile picture.
  • You have verified your email and phone number
  • You have a public account

Then you need to select the type of verification, either personal or institutional. Personal means you are a prominent person, such as a celebrity, influencer, or journalist.

Institutional means you are a nonprofit institution, such as an organization or university.

If you are a brand or company, you must register as a business account on TikTok and then follow the steps outlined above.

Pro tip: If you are registering as a person and not as an institution or brand, make sure you have a valid ID on hand, such as a driver’s license or passport. When filling out your application, you will be asked to prove your identity.

Don’t be like me and scramble for your wallet at the last minute.

Once you submit your application, just play the waiting game for about 30 days – which is the time TikTok needs to review your application.

During that time, you can watch your favorite TV shows, go for a hike, backpack across Europe, or watch paint dry. But whatever you do, don’t submit another application until 30 days have passed.

This will only slow down the verification process.

However, if you are still not verified after 30 days, you can submit another application.

How Many Followers Do You Need to Get Verified on TikTok?

Contrary to popular belief, TikTok does not consider the number of followers or likes on your page when verifying users. I have seen pages with hundreds of thousands of followers that were not verified, despite going viral or gaining popularity.

For example, one of my favorite creators, former beauty queen Taryn Delanie Smith, has over a million followers on TikTok and has gone viral several times. Yet to my surprise, she is not verified!

Author Kaymie Wuerfel has more than 260,000 followers and has a blue checkmark on TikTok. So don’t worry too much about the number of followers.

Instead of focusing on follower count, think about the quality of your content.

How to Grow Your TikTok and Increase Your Chances of Verification

If you want to maximize your chances of getting verified on TikTok, follow these tips that I’ve compiled based on verified accounts I follow:

1. Be Consistent

According to TikTok, you must have logged into your account in the last six months to be eligible for verification. However, logging in alone is not enough to ensure your best chances.

You need to post frequently and consistently, just like artist Kaarin Joy does. Joy is an interior decorator who posts 1-2 TikToks daily with details about various art and design projects she’s working on in her home.

I started following this creator when she had fewer than 1 million followers, so believe me when I say I definitely noticed her follower count increase dramatically when she transitioned from posting every few days to posting once or twice daily.

So it’s no surprise to me that after years of consistent content, she’s accumulated 2.4 million followers and earned the coveted blue checkmark on TikTok.

You should also aim to post at the most optimal time for your audience. Our research showed that the best time to post on TikTok is between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., followed by 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. However, don’t be afraid to experiment and find out what your audience prefers.

2. Follow Media News

This is less of a tip and more of a necessity, but I’m concerned that many creators or brands don’t think about it when applying for verification – media coverage!

According to TikTok, applicants must appear in multiple news sources to be considered for verification.

Press releases and sponsored or paid media do not count.

I’ve been following the career of content creator and influencer Bretman Rock for nearly 10 years. This entertainer has appeared in media outlets like Vogue, Insider, and Elite Daily – and of course, he is verified on TikTok.

So if you have a video that went viral, take a moment to search for yourself or your brand on Google or other search engines and find out if your content appeared in any news coverage.

Make sure to bookmark or save any articles you find so you can submit them with your application.

While press releases or sponsored media won’t be considered in the verification process, you can still use them to build relationships with journalists and news media, which will lead to actual media coverage of your brand.

3. Be Authentic

I always spotlight Keith Lee’s platform when it’s time to discuss authenticity. This family-friendly guy and food critic became famous on TikTok by simply being himself.

Thanks to his commitment to providing authentic reactions to the food he tastes and being transparent with his TikTok audience, he has stood out and helped earn himself the coveted verification checkmark.

Professional tip: When it comes to authenticity, make sure your username is similar to your business name. Notice that Keith Lee’s username is the same as his real name. This makes it easier for TikTok to verify that the account belongs to a real person.

4. Be creative.

Adventures in Arcadia is a TikTok account that combines food with role-playing, such as Dungeons & Dragons. Its most popular series on TikTok is Roll for Sandwich, where the host uses D&D dice and character sheets to create a sandwich.

The TikTok trend of using D&D dice to randomly assemble food was started by Adventures in Arcadia, but soon other creators picked it up and created pizza, nachos, burritos, and more.

However, while they are all entertaining in their own way, Roll for Sandwich by Adventures in Arcadia remains the most popular in the “Roll For Universe” and the account is the only one of its kind that has been verified.
