The good news is there is no strict minimum

Five influencers whom Kupfollowers.cz interviewed – all with fewer than 6,000 Instagram followers – said they are paid by brands for posts to their small audience. So the key is not the number of followers itself, but a combination of audience engagement, topic focus, and the trust you have with your fans.

For example, one lifestyle influencer started earning money in 2021 with a few thousand Instagram followers. She makes money through brand collaborations and charges up to 3,500 CZK per feed post, she said in May to Kupfollowers.

“I always thought you needed a million followers or a hundred thousand followers to make money on social media, but that’s actually not true. There are so many ways you can turn it into a business, even if it’s part-time.”

Approximate earnings by follower count (orientation overview)

The following overview is approximate and based on the experiences of influencers we spoke with. The actual reward always depends on engagement rate, profile topic, content quality, and agreement with the brand. Take these numbers as a guide, not as a fixed price list.

  • 1,000–10,000 followers (nano influencer): first paid collaborations, often in the form of barters (free product) or smaller rewards. This is where you can start most easily thanks to high credibility and personal relationship with the audience.
  • 10,000–50,000 followers (micro influencer): more regular paid collaborations, affiliate commissions, and access to additional Instagram monetization features.
  • 50,000–100,000 followers: more stable income from multiple sources at once – brand campaigns, affiliate links, and your own products or services.
  • 100,000+ followers: larger campaigns and long-term partnerships, with many micro-influencers earning their living from influencing full-time even with smaller audiences.

In the meantime, other influencers can start earning money by receiving a commission from sales through affiliate marketing.

Instagram also pays some influencers directly through incentive programs. Some Instagram monetization features, such as “Badges” – an Instagram tool for tipping during IG Live – require creators to have at least 10,000 followers. Many of these programs are also limited to certain countries, require a minimum age of 18, and require accounts to be registered as business or creator accounts in the app.

Although doors have opened for many other Instagram creators to start earning, they often don’t start earning full-time right away (although a relatively large number of micro-influencers with fewer than 100,000 followers work as full-time influencers).

How Instagram influencers make money

There are several ways to make Instagram a source of income these days – and most of them don’t require hundreds of thousands of followers:

  • Paid brand collaborations – sponsored posts, Reels or Stories.
  • Affiliate marketing – commissions from sales through your links, now easier than ever thanks to the link sticker.
  • Your own products and services – from e-books and courses to physical goods or consulting.
  • Instagram monetization tools – badges, tips on Live and similar features.
  • Selling digital content and subscriptions – exclusive content for your most loyal fans.

You can buy followers here and if you’d like to buy likes, you can buy them here. It’s a great tool for strengthening your Instagram profile and building initial credibility faster with new visitors.

Today, Instagram influencers no longer need hundreds of thousands of followers to start earning money.

Here are a few reasons why

  • “Nano” and “micro” influencers (usually accounts with fewer than 100,000 followers) are hired by many brands across industries. These smaller influencers have demonstrated the power of niche and engaged communities on Instagram, where the platform was otherwise flooded with fake followers and disproportionate engagement. Influencers can earn hundreds to thousands of dollars on these deals.
  • Meta is opening its multi-billion dollar wallet and paying some influencers, as evidenced by its impressive $1 billion investment in content creators. The platform has also introduced a marketplace for creator and brand sponsorships.
  • Sharing affiliate links is now easier than ever before, as Instagram widely introduced the link sticker in 2021. However, some affiliate programs have their own requirements, such as LTK or ShopStyle.

Kupfollowers interviewed more than two dozen Instagramers about how much money they earn, with their follower counts ranging between 2,000 and just over 100,000. Many of them use the Lafluence platform to obtain paid partnerships.

How to increase your chances of earning from Instagram

Before brand offers start coming in, it will help you to focus on what successful profiles have in common:

  • Choose a clear topic (niche) – brands look for creators with a distinct focus and specific audience.
  • Take care of engagement – an active and engaged audience is more valuable to brands than a high number of inactive followers.
  • Be consistent – regular posts and Reels keep your profile’s reach and growth going.
  • Switch to a creator or business account – you’ll gain access to analytics and monetization tools.
  • Show your numbers and results – prepare a simple overview (media kit) for potential partners.
