TikTok introduces Photo Mode
TikTok announced in a blog post that it is introducing Photo Mode, a carousel format created specifically for sharing static images in the app. In addition to static photos, creators can add music to their posts.
Posting content in Photo Mode is similar to posting regular video content in the app.
How to use TikTok Photo Mode
To start creating content in Photo Mode, press the “+” icon at the bottom of your for you page.
In the bottom right corner, click the “Upload” button and open your photo gallery. Select the photos you want to add to your carousel and click the “Next” button.
Like TikTok’s video posting features, a content editing page will appear. Here you can add any music and effects.
At the bottom of the screen, there will be a small icon labeled “Switch to video mode”.

Competition on social media
This new feature bears a striking resemblance to Instagram. Instagram is known for allowing creators to post carousel posts with static images in their channel and stories, and TikTok is apparently mimicking this.
It thus adds to the recent history of social media platforms mirroring each other’s features.
In the past, TikTok has drawn inspiration from new features across social media platforms, including Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and most recently new video features on Twitter, so some may be surprised that TikTok is following the lead of other apps’ features.
TikTok’s new enhanced video editing tools
In addition to the Photo Mode feature, TikTok has introduced several new enhanced editing features.
In a blog post, the company announced:
“TikTok’s enhanced editing tools make it easy to edit clips, sounds, images and text in a new editing environment, all within the TikTok creation flow. You’ll be able to:
- Edit clips: Compose, trim and split video clips.
- Edit sounds: Trim, crop and adjust the length of sounds.
- Edit and position text: Insert all the sounds you want to edit into your computer: More easily edit, position and adjust the length of text.
- Add overlay elements: Add photo and video overlays for image-in-image compositing (or video-in-video).
- Adjust video speed: Speed up or slow down the pace of video clips.
- Frame content: Used to create frames that are part of video clips: Rotate or zoom in and out of individual clip frames.
- Add sound effects”
The company also announced longer content captions, with each post now able to have up to 2,200 characters. This is a big jump from the previous limit of 300 characters.
New TikTok features, including photo mode, are currently available in the USA and most regions worldwide.
