And given that Instagram is now hiding likes, in 2026 the number of followers will matter even more. According to experts, businesses must begin approaching Instagram more creatively and authentically than ever before. If you’re using Instagram as a marketing tool, you’ll definitely benefit from the following tips.

1. Create Longer Captions

If you want to have more followers, you should start truly communicating with people. In the past, Instagram was purely about visuals. Unified design, quality photos, and graphics were the main prerequisites for audience success.

But experts agree that the biggest trend in 2026 will be authenticity – long and interesting captions will allow you to better acquaint people with your company and vision.

According to research by Fohr, the average length of captions in Instagram posts has doubled since 2016. And it’s expected that by 2020 it should reach 405 characters, which is about 65-70 words!

When you offer people an interesting, funny, or educational text, they’re much more likely to share and comment on your posts.

2. Share More Videos

Videos are the future of Instagram and many companies are already creating longer video content for IGTV.

IGTV is a very fun Instagram feature, and thanks to recent changes by the platform, it’s now more integrated into Instagram, making it easier to get video content to your target audience.

Video content is very user-friendly and has a higher likelihood of engagement from followers compared to photos or images. Moreover, every video shared to IGTV is displayed on followers’ home pages 4 times more than photos.

3. Promote Your Instagram Content on Other Platforms

If you want to gain more followers, it’s time to start thinking about Instagram in the context of your overall online marketing strategy. Do you also have a website, newsletter, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, or Pinterest?

Cross-promotion of these platforms is something you definitely shouldn’t forget. It’s an effective and fairly simple way to gain new followers. You can do it in several ways, for example:

  • Incorporate Instagram Feed into the design of your website,
  • encourage people to “learn more” on Instagram,
  • include Instagram in your email marketing campaigns.

4. Create Your Own Instagram Stories Filter

Augmented reality is something that definitely shouldn’t be missing from 2020 marketing. And you don’t have to develop your own application right away like, for example, Burger King. Try starting by designing your own Instagram filter.

5. Use Your Own Hashtag to Build a Community

Your own #hashtags are a great way to:

  • help spread awareness about your company,
  • find content that relates to you and was created by your fans
  • create a community and attract new followers.

In fact, at least according to a study by Simply Measured, 70% of all most commonly used hashtags are created by companies.

It needs to be something unique that resonates with your brand. It can be as simple as the name or motto of your company, product or campaign, or you can have fun with it.

As an example of such a more interesting hashtag that I personally liked, I’ll mention the hashtag of the cosmetics company LUSH#wethebathers, which unites a community of people who love to bathe with LUSH bath bombs. Their Christmas hashtag #lushchristmas was also very popular.

6. Create memes that will resonate with people

Companies are recognizing the power of clever memes, especially when trying to build company image and identity, increase interest in products, or gain new followers.

Although everyone recognizes a meme when they see one, its definition is not easy.

Generally, it is a medium that is transmitted by sharing between people on the internet. Memes usually have some cultural significance, are funny and clever, and typically include a combination of text and a photo.

Although it is not easy to define them, it is clear as daylight that everyone loves them. The challenge that memes present to companies lies in the boundary between relevance and being ingratiating. You certainly don’t want to compromise on aesthetics, seriousness, or your company’s message.

But if you can cleverly incorporate a bit of humor in the form of memes into your classic content, it can definitely benefit you in 2020.

7. Collaborate with micro-influencers

If you want to reach new potential customers or clients, influencer marketing is currently one of the best ways to do it.

With an average engagement rate of 3.21%, influencer marketing is far ahead of the 1.5% engagement rate of traditional social media advertising. A well-executed collaboration can therefore help you increase your follower count relatively quickly.

Currently, people are beginning to become saturated with large influencers who have hundreds of thousands of followers. Instead, they are looking for authenticity and someone they can relate to better. That’s why you should go for smaller influencers in the future. People who are followed by 0-25 thousand followers tend to have the highest engagement rate from their follower base.
