How Many Followers on Social Media Do You Need to Make Money?
A simple question, but a complex answer.
How many followers on social media do you need to make money?
Sufficiently large influencers today on popular platforms like TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram can earn truly large sums of money. However, everything usually depends on the number of followers and the number of views of their published content.
While world megastars like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kylie Jenner or footballer Cristiano Ronaldo (each of them has over 200 million followers on Instagram alone) can charge more than one million dollars (over 21 million CZK) for a single marketing post, smaller influencers recruiting from “ordinary people” actually don’t need as many followers as it might seem to make their social networks start earning decently.
The music licensing platform Lickd.co has now attempted to calculate exactly how much, creating a special analysis called “social salary calculator” for this purpose. It focused on what minimum performance your account on a given platform must have in order to start generating income. Based on published data, it is relatively easy to calculate under what conditions a given network will be able to make you more money.
The Crown is currently strengthening and one dollar comes to about 21 CZK, so let’s say that if you’re already investing effort and time into social networks, you’d want to start generating some decent income from them. Let’s say 100,000 $ or 2.2 million crowns per year. That’s a lot of money, but in this commercial world, achieving it isn’t as unrealistic as it might seem.
I should also add that the analysis was of course conducted based on conditions for the English-speaking market, which is good to keep in mind, since conditions on the Czech market may be worse:
YouTube
According to Lickd.co, you need to have at least 1,000 subscribers and about 24 million views per year on YouTube to take home 100,000 $. This is because to start earning from YouTube, you must enter the Youtube Partner Programme (YPP), through which money flows to you from ads on your videos.
To enter YPP, an influencer needs at least 1,000 subscribers and over the last 12 months their videos must accumulate at least 4,000 “valid watch hours” plus you need to connect AdSense from Google to your account.
YouTube calculator from Influencer Marketing Hub estimates that the average YouTuber today receives 7.60 $ for every 1,000 views of their video, with 45% of this income going to Google’s pocket. To calculate potential YouTube income, you can also use the YouTube Money Calculator from Influencer MarketingHub.
How do you get to 100,000 $ on Instagram? According to the analysis, you need to have at least 5,000 followers and publish 308 sponsored posts per year. Which can actually be easier than you think.
A recent documentary from HBO actually showed how ordinary people are able to manipulate not only Instagram but other platforms as well to become famous influencers. People who have over a million followers here reportedly get over 250,000 dollars for each shared post.
To start earning revenue from Instagram, you need to change your account to a professional account and select Business.
TikTok
On TikTok, you need at least 10,000 followers and over 270 million views per year to earn an estimated $100,000. The estimate is based on a blog on SocialPubli.
TikTok has a partner program similar to YouTube called TikTok Creator Fund. To join it, you must be based in the USA, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, or Italy, you must be over 18 years old, you must have at least 100,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days. Just as with the previous platforms, it is equally important that your account and content comply with community guidelines and do not violate the platform’s terms of use. Otherwise, you can easily lose your advertising revenue, as many a YouTuber could tell you.
