All thanks to Instagram.

In the following comprehensive post, we’ve outlined step by step how we achieved this and how you can do it too.

As Instagram and its audience evolved, we evolved too. We changed our strategies and adapted our methods to find what worked, and we managed to climb the ladder to 3.6 million organic followers.

Now we’ll show you exactly what we did to get this far, and how you can do it too. Learn how to gain a huge following and start leveraging the power of this exciting and ever-thriving social network.

1. Choose Instagram Content That’s Right for You

This part will require some thought and effort.

To gain a huge number of real followers on Instagram, you need to create content that is not only tailored specifically for Instagram, but also content that matches what your audience wants. Finding the right approach and style is key, because it will become the way your followers know you.

Generally speaking, there are types of images that work well across many industries; graphics with inspirational quotes, quality food photography, travel shots, or beauty selfies are safe starting points. For video content, follow trends that relate to sounds, format, and topics.

In doing so, carefully consider what type of content you create. You need to realize that Instagram is such a hit because it is a completely unique platform and the experience it provides users is completely different from something like Facebook or X (formerly Twitter). Produce content that is not only tailored specifically for Instagram, but also content that suits what your audience wants.

For example, consider:

  • How will people find your content?
  • What hashtags will you use?
  • How can you format your videos to capture the viewer’s attention?
  • If someone discovers your content, will it interest them enough to click on your account?

What is it about the content you create that makes people do more than just scroll past? According to neuroscientists at MIT, the human brain can recognize images it sees in just 13 milliseconds. In less than a second, a person decides whether you’re worth their time. This means you need to stand out.

Once you decide on the type of content and strategy, it’s important that you stick with this topic.

The number one reason people return to any brand or company is consistency, whether it’s a Starbucks Macchiato or a Snickers bar.

It’s exactly the same on Instagram. Be consistent in your content.

That’s also why we are very selective when it comes to the type of accounts and posts we share, which is also known as “share for share” (S4S). We protect our brand and our audience immensely, so we always want to create only content that we are absolutely certain our niche wants.

A common problem many people face when starting on Instagram is that they’re not entirely sure what type of topic or content they want to create. Unfortunately, there really is no simple solution, because ultimately you don’t want to be a copycat of a larger account or brand. If you want to be truly successful on Instagram, you need to be a little unique.

The best way to start is to do a hashtag research (don’t worry, we’ll cover hashtags further in this article).

Find competitors who use the same hashtags as you, or even find users who follow these hashtags, and see what other type of content they like.

From there it’s just a matter of testing your content. Do A/B testing, try one type of content for one week and something different the next week. Find out what works best and really get to know your audience.

For starters, we recommend using the Canva app. We use Canva for all our posts and we love the freedom it gives you when creating designs according to your ideas. Plus, it’s free to use!

2. Create content that your audience will like (hint: it’s short-form video).

Once you know what type of content is right for your brand, it’s time to really focus on creating great content that you know will engage your audience. It may seem obvious, but we always encounter the neglect of content creation itself. Find out what your customers like to see on Instagram or what topics resonate with them, and fill your account with relevant content.

When we first started developing our Instagram account, the platform only shared images (would you believe it?). Now this platform is primarily for short videos or Reels.

Here are some best practices for Instagram Reels:

  • Use vertical video (this is a must)
  • Create content that has a strong hook in the first two seconds and that users will watch from beginning to end (skipping will hurt your rating).
  • Experiment with creative tools such as filters, effects, text, and music.
  • Include hidden captions (many people watch without sound).
  • Be original – get inspired by others, but create unique content

You must, however, connect with your audience. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

That’s why it’s so important to build a good relationship with your audience so you can find out what type of content they like. Many times we’ve posted something we thought would absolutely crush engagement, but it turned out to be a dud. Other times, we’ve scratched our heads over why this particular post was so popular.

One good way to find out what your customers like is to look at what your competition is posting or what content is shared on accounts that are popular in your industry. Build a good relationship with your audience to find out what type of content they like.

3. People like to see other people

Include faces in your content. Videos and images with faces are known to increase engagement because our brains naturally crave interaction with other people. Also, content that doesn’t include faces but instead is a point-of-view shot can help people feel like they’re part of the content.

Just look at the HiSmile account on Instagram and you’ll see the power of showing people using their products.

4. Calls to Action (CTA)

Every post should include a prominent CTA that encourages your followers to interact with you. This could be engaging with the content or sharing it in their stories. By adding a call to action, people are more likely to follow through with the action than without it (they don’t know what they don’t know).

The CTA should be relevant to the content and should not be the same as the one you used in your bio (we’ll mention the bio later). It’s a softer ask.

Think of a CTA as a way to remind people that there is an action they could take. By adding a CTA to your content, you’re simply reminding your followers that they don’t have to just scroll on, but they can actually take further action, including liking your content or writing a comment.

Ask questions in your captions to encourage people to respond. This is a very simple tactic to ensure that your Instagram followers interact with your account.

“Putting a question in your caption will always spark interest and get people to read and perhaps even respond.” – Bianca Cheah, founder and director of Sporteluxe

The ultimate goal of your posts is to increase audience engagement. You want people to be interested in your account and to feel personally connected to your brand. A CTA is a way to build community, to gently remind your followers that they can interact with you personally.

Examples of CTAs are “sending this to someone who needs it” or “comment if you agree”. Always give your fans something they can do. This will help with the organic spread of your account.

Pro Tip: For video content, it’s important to include a CTA in the middle of the content. Otherwise, your audience will move on after closing the value loop.

5. Storytelling

Capture people’s attention by providing them with a story; don’t settle for just a generic line of text. Engage people and show what value you can provide at once.

Developing a story also relates to emotions. Always try to evoke emotions with your posts. Whether you want to inspire people, make them laugh, or amaze them, your content should always aim to evoke emotions in your audience. A great example you can look at here is Chubbies, and notice how they always try to make their audience laugh by posting product assortment, humor, and user-generated content.

6. User-Generated Content

Share user-generated content whenever possible. Not only will you gain social proof for your brand and people will be much more likely to follow you, but it will also help you build a vibrant and engaged community around your Instagram account.

Frank Body built almost its entire Instagram strategy on curating user-generated content and the community hashtag #frankeffect. This helped them build a community of engaged Instagram followers and also create hundreds of loyal brand ambassadors.

Instagram get followers FrankBod usergenerated content

Regularly use your posts to ask your followers to share their content with you. Make sure to give them an incentive to do so, such as running a contest or giveaway on Instagram. You can easily curate their posts by asking them to use your branded hashtag.

7. Your Instagram Aesthetic

To get more people communicating with you, you also need to maintain a consistent aesthetic theme so that your Instagram content reinforces your brand identity.

Here are a few ways to create an Instagram aesthetic that stands out:

  • Use the same type of captions
  • Film videos at the same angle or style
  • Use branded graphics and colors
  • Showcase yourself or your co-founder on camera

Unlike when we started out, a “professional look” isn’t necessarily critical to success on the platform. Still, you want to make sure your Instagram account isn’t too far removed from what a potential customer would see on your website or product pages.

Notice how Nespresso maintains its aesthetic theme by consistently ensuring its posts have similar tones and colors. Not only do these posts look great, but the consistency and strong branding allow you to see how their channel flows naturally, which builds awareness and affinity (and it doesn’t hurt to have George Clooney as a brand ambassador).

Remember, when it comes to Instagram, connection is always better than quantity. Don’t post anything just to post something. Always make sure your content brings some value to your audience.

8. Treat Your Instagram Community as Lifetime Customers

One of the biggest mistakes people make when building an Instagram account is viewing their followers as just numbers.

It’s easy to become obsessed with follower numbers, rather than realizing that each person who decides to follow you is actually a real person. No matter what account you’re running, the same applies everywhere. You must always respect your audience.

I really cannot stress this enough and it has become even clearer to us as we’ve gained more experience with this platform. If you’re not paying attention to your audience and listening to them, then you’re not creating anything that will have any meaningful impact. You’re just stroking your own ego.

So how do you know if you’re connecting with your audience?

While the number of followers is an important metric, our journey to a million followers taught us that you also need to pay attention to your engagement rate. This means how many likes you get, how many people actually bother to comment on your posts, how many people actually go through your Instagram sales funnel.

According to the well-known Pareto Principle, 80% of your results come from only 20% of your audience, or 80% of your revenue comes from only 20% of your customers. While it’s more of a rule than a hard scientific fact, the Pareto Principle should make you realize that it’s not so much about having a large number of followers, but rather about having a large core of engaged followers.

how to get more followers on instagram increase instagram engagement

You don’t want to have a large number of followers because it gives you the right to brag; you want to have a large number of followers because by increasing your reach and exposure, you increase the probability of finding one authentic follower.

A true and authentic follower is someone who absolutely loves your content and what you do. That’s why you need to focus on creating savable and shareable content.

If you ever want to build any influence or exposure, it should be your main goal when growing a large number of followers. Ten thousand followers isn’t that impressive if you don’t have at least 1,000 real followers.

That’s why we treat our community like customers.

Try to respond to comments on your content and don’t forget to reply to as many DM messages as possible. Really show that there’s a person behind the screen. It’s a reliable way to stand out from the crowd. Supergoop! does excellent work responding to comments and suggestions.

Supergoop instagram followers

When communicating with other users, try to be as conversational as possible and stick to the way you speak in real life. Highlight the personality behind your brand and let people know you’re not just another robot.

It’s amazing how many brands forget about the social aspect of social media. It’s no longer a one-way communication model where the audience has to passively accept what you say. If someone takes the time and actually writes a comment on your post, the least you can do is reply.

It’s a simple reward for those who bother to have a dialogue with you. Something so simple has a big impact on turning someone into a real fan. We even send private messages to new followers when appropriate. The key to success is making your Instagram followers feel welcome and happy to become part of your community.

As we mentioned in the previous section, you’ll find that posts that contain calls to action requesting comments tend to get the most shares and mentions. By starting a conversation this way, you can show your audience that you’re not some faceless corporation, but a person or people who really care about what others think.

It can even bring unexpected results, because we often find real gems for article ideas and various people to interview within the comments.

Pro Tip: We believe that Instagram followers are more valuable than TikTok followers. Why? Because they’re usually more willing to engage with your content and have a conversation, while TikTok users are just there for entertainment.

9. Share Instagram content more often than you think

Try to share content regularly and more often than you’re comfortable with. When we started building our account, we shared roughly once every three to four hours, because the larger the volume, the higher the chance you’ll hit a viral post that people will see on the “For You” page.

However, don’t batch post a whole range of content at once; users will often see it as spam and unfollow you. Think of it as sowing seeds.

You don’t want to dump all your seeds into one hole at once; you want to spread them out.

You’re aiming for consistency. If your audience can’t comfortably rely on you to post regularly, there won’t be many people willing to follow you just because you post something here and there.

Pro Tip: Despite popular belief… there is a post on Sunday. Sunday is usually a pretty quiet day on Instagram, which is a great opportunity to get ahead of others and get your content in front of even more people.

10. Your Bio and Profile Picture on Instagram is Your Landing Page

On Instagram, your bio is a key part of your property. Often it’s the first contact people have with your brand. You’ll make the most of this section by including a strong call to action. You can use a maximum of 150 characters, so a short, concise CTA works best.

A strong CTA should be absolutely impossible for your audience to miss. You already know your content can be viewed, so make sure they actually look at your bio and offer them something you know they’ll like.

To create a strong CTA, you need to be as simple and straightforward as possible. Because with Instagram you only have one live link available, which is in your bio, you want to extract the maximum value from it.

Your bio should also be compelling. Your potential Instagram followers have only a few seconds to decide whether they want to follow you or not. Your bio should catch their attention and make them want to follow you, or at least scroll down to view your content.

Your bio should also be searchable. We included the keywords “startup,” “entrepreneurs,” and “entrepreneur magazine,” so when people search Instagram for these terms, our profile will appear in their search results.

Also make sure your profile picture is clear and eye-catching so people recognize it even in its small icon form. You can also use your profile picture as advertising real estate. We used it to share information about one of our virtual summits. Design-wise it’s tricky, but it can stop your followers from scrolling past, as they’re used to your regular logo.

11. Using Comment Automation

Recently we’ve been using a comment automation tool called ManyChat, which helps our audience learn more about the content we share, whether it’s giveaways, events, podcasts or in-depth articles like this one. The comment automation tool creates a conversation in your account’s DMs, which feels more personal than a comment thread.

12. Use Hashtags to Get Into Your Niche

Hashtags aren’t what they used to be, but they’re still important.

When we were growing our account followers to a million, “hashtag bombing” was the way to increase followers and gain visibility.

Today the platform encourages different things, such as trending sounds, but be careful about using copyrighted sounds. Business accounts on Instagram have greater restrictions.

When it comes to hashtags, we recommend approaching them more as keyword research rather than a magic tool to gain followers. So explore what hashtags are used in your industry and start adding them to your posts. Here’s a recipe for which hashtags to use for each post:

  • 1-2 branded hashtags of your choice
  • 2-3 general industry hashtags
  • 2-3 specific hashtags related to the content you’re posting.

There’s still no exact science to using hashtags, so you need to be willing to experiment with what works best for your account to match Instagram’s algorithms.

13. Networking With Your Specialty

It’s not just about content and keywords. To thrive on Instagram, you need to reach out to real, live people and communicate with them. Networking can work wonders in the social media space and has been a major driver of success.

When we started out, we were able to connect with a huge network of entrepreneurs who had Instagram accounts with over 20,000 followers. They helped us tremendously by sharing our content, and similar networks exist for all kinds of industries, with users who are all willing to help, as long as you return the favor of course!

Remember, if you help people without expecting anything in return, you will receive good karma. Do not approach connecting and linking with other accounts with the attitude “What will I get out of it?”. Rather, think of it as simply helping your colleague, and you never know if something good might happen to you later.

14. Leverage Partnerships to Gain More Instagram Followers

When it comes to gaining a large number of Instagram followers, you will need to get used to the idea that collaboration is more important than competition.

This is where an incredibly powerful concept called S4S comes in. For beginners, S4S is short for “shout for shout”. If you want to gain a million followers on Instagram or even tens of thousands, you need to get used to the idea of sharing other people’s content. The basics of S4S are quite straightforward. You ask another influencer in your niche if they would like to share your content, and in return, you will share theirs.

This way, you will be able to mutually expose your brands to each other’s audiences, some of whom have probably never heard of you before. The best part is that if you carefully choose who you do S4S with, you will likely find someone with an audience that you know will also like your content. You will quickly discover that one of the best things about Instagram is that it allows you to directly penetrate niches with distinct preferences, interests, hobbies, and needs.

kathmandu instagram example shoutout

As you can see in the images above, Kathmandu shared an image from a travel blogger. Neither of the companies compete with each other, but both operate in the travel industry and rather complement each other mutually.

These types of transactions are unique on Instagram and absolutely invaluable for anyone who wants to grow a large following. However, remember that you should always aim to provide a mutual exchange of value.

Do not view others in your niche as competition, but as potential partners.

If you are afraid that someone will “steal your followers” and as a result refuse to collaborate with others, then it is very unlikely that you will create any real impact on Instagram.

When you are just starting out, it can be a bit intimidating to ask other accounts to give you a shoutout, but the benefits really outweigh the costs. Having a large account give you a shoutout will do more for your follower count than almost anything else. However, it is very important to make sure that you are choosing the right accounts from which you want to get a shoutout.

If you already have one strong account, use it to strengthen your smaller accounts that may need more attention. For example, actor Jason Momoa uses his personal account to shout out and promote his fashion brand “So Ill”. His personal account has a reach of over 15 million, while his brand has only about 150 thousand.

Instagram Followers Jason Momoa Shoutout Influencer

If you choose an account based solely on the number of followers and its topic or audience does not match yours, then you have simply wasted time and money, because there is no guarantee that such a shoutout will bring you a good return on investment.

There are several different types of shoutouts you can pursue:

  • Caption mention only: The page will use their own image and style that they usually use, and mention your page in the caption. This is not as effective as your own image or branded image. Caption-only mention can be a cheaper alternative.
  • Or your own image with your product or service + caption. This works better than just a caption-only shoutout, but you need to make sure the call to action is good. Some accounts will let you post the image for a certain period of time, others will leave it up. Generally, the higher the page traffic, the more rules and restrictions you will see.

The strategy behind shoutouts can also vary. We recommend adding a CTA to follow your page rather than directing people to subscribe, as this way you can engage the audience and collaborate more with them.

We tried to get viewers to follow our page, and we found that it’s more effective to get them to follow you. Click links don’t fit in descriptions, so it can be difficult to get people to take specific actions. It takes people more time to go to bio, find a link, click it, and then subscribe than to click a follow button.

Like any other transactions in the world, S4S is about making the exchange mutually beneficial. You need to ensure that both sides get something of similar value from this exchange.

If you have an account with only a few thousand followers and you ask another account with 500 thousand followers, you will either be ignored, politely declined, or laughed at outright. What possible benefit could the larger account have from the smaller one? If you don’t have something equally valuable to offer, then you shouldn’t ask someone to do S4S for you.

Many people are discouraged by the idea of approaching larger accounts with S4S requests because they feel they don’t have a comparable number of followers. But even though follower count may be the most important metric on Instagram, that doesn’t mean it’s the only metric on Instagram. If it were, anyone with a couple of dollars and a few thousand bots as followers on Instagram could become an influencer.

The best way to find leverage, whether in any business deal, not just on Instagram, is to take a step back and think about what only you can offer. What is that unique aspect you can bring that the other person could hardly obtain?

For example, you can compare your level of engagement. If you can guarantee a highly engaged audience with many real Instagram followers, then you can easily use that as leverage in S4S. Because the level of respect and loyalty you’ve gained with your audience is something only you can provide, making it a valuable commodity.

Besides that, think about what else you can offer.

You can easily bring value and build a lot of goodwill by being a regular commenter on a larger account. A valuable comment is something more than just a generic statement “wow, that’s great!”. Stand out by putting in the effort to be different.

Start an interesting discussion and let the target influencer know that you exist. Who knows, maybe you’ll really catch them in a generous mood and maybe they’ll give you a shoutout just because they like your vibe.

15. Collaborating with Influencers to Get More Instagram Followers

This is by far one of the best ways to increase your Instagram followers. You will hardly find another tactic that generates such a strong return on investment.

Create a list of 10-20 influencers you’d like to collaborate with regularly. Know exactly who you want to contact, because these will be the people who will help you take your Instagram account to the next level. Get influencers to share your content or give you a shoutout. Work out with influencers to point people to you by entering into S4S deals.

Using hashtags, find out who the best influencers are in your niche. Look at what the main hashtags are in your niche, and see if you can identify any specific account that consistently appears in “top” or “trending” posts. You can essentially guarantee that this is an influencer and someone you want to connect with.

But before you start sending free products or signing expensive contracts with influencers, let’s break down the types of influencers:

  • Traditional celebrities: Hollywood stars, musicians and politicians
  • Macro-influencers: Highest collaboration costs and widest reach and audience
  • Influencers: Full-time influencers or rising stars, usually with a strong voice in a niche or industry
  • Micro-influencers: Least expensive collaborations and narrowest niche, can be a popular account in a mid-sized city or a trusted voice in a niche
  • Nano-influencers: An ordinary person with a consistent presence on social media or their content.

Keep in mind that influencers and celebrities must disclose sponsored content on their social media channels. It’s about transparency and making followers aware that someone was paid for promoting a product or was given something valuable, rather than just liking it.

In an effort to eradicate misleading promotion or endorsement of products, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued simple guidelines on what you can and cannot do.

Influencers and celebrities are now required to follow these guidelines when using hashtags or other labels. If you decide to pay or sponsor another brand to promote yours, make sure you follow these guidelines. This includes specific hashtags and, in the case of a business account, the label “paid partnership”. You can see both examples in the post below: #sponsored and “paid partnership with earthboundfarm”.

These rules only apply in cases of financial, employment, personal or family relationships. You can freely repost and share content from other brands you like, but you cannot pay for it or be paid for it.

16. Account Takeovers

Exchange accounts with other influencers or popular accounts in your industry. Take over someone else’s account for a day and show their audience who you are, and vice versa. This is a great strategy for anyone with a personal brand.

The Australian international magazine of contemporary art “BeautifulBazaar” organized a takeover/collaboration with actress Emma Roberts and Karah Priest. The collaboration allowed the magazine to promote Roberts and Priest’s literary society “Belletrist” to readers and also promote local artists and provide a behind-the-scenes look at the art world.

17. Whitelist Ads

Skip the exchange and let an influencer run whitelist ads on your account. We’ll leave that to Gretta van Riel.

18. Instagram Stories and Reels

Did you know that according to a study published by Instagram, more than 500 million users watch Instagram Stories daily?

Using stories and reels is an easy way to increase your brand’s exposure. Not all followers sit and scroll through their entire feed and your latest post may get lost in the algorithm. By posting stories, sharing content and essentially being incredibly active in the app, your posts will gain support. Instagram stories and reels give you the opportunity to connect more with your followers.

They allow you to take photos, add your own effects and filters, and share them with your followers. Unlike a post that stays online until you decide to delete it, stories expire after 24 hours, though they are commonly saved to an “archive” on your account that only you can see.

If followers start tagging your brand in their posts, a brilliant way to increase engagement and connect with followers is to share the content in your stories. They went to the effort to tag you, make sure you do the same.

Take advantage of the Featured Stories option on your page, which are stories you’ve shared and want to have at the top of your account. Highlights are a great way to share content that may not fit aesthetically into your feed, but is important to share. Below, Lululemon highlighted and categorized interesting and important stories.

In an effort to fill the gap created by the TikTok drama, Instagram launched Reels. This new feature allows people to record fifteen-second videos using reproduced music and other great special effects and works hand in hand with Instagram stories.

In addition to their own filters, GIFs, and emojis, stories and reels also offer geolocation and other data for live tracking. Want to showcase your thermal underwear products to your local area? Mark your location, add a current temperature tag, and apply a couple of great effects.

Pay attention to your insights from stories and reels. This data will reveal important metrics such as CTR, skips, exits, and impressions per story.

19. Creating Proactive and Reactive Content

Due to the rise of short videos and their virality, brands are trying to leverage rapidly changing trends hoping their content will be watched by millions of viewers. If that sounds a bit overwhelming, we understand. That’s why our friend and social media content creation instructor Talia Datt suggests balancing proactive and reactive content.

  • Proactive content is content you can plan on a monthly basis and that is relevant to your brand and business goals.
  • Reactive content is generating content based on TikTok trends and applying them to your brand.

20. Contests

Run contests on Instagram that require users to follow you in order to participate. Everyone loves free stuff. By hosting a giveaway, you’ll gain a lot of followers overnight, but don’t forget to promote it, or you won’t see any results.

Require followers to tag their friends in order to participate. This is one of the best organic ways to quickly gain followers on Instagram.

21. Instagram Ads

If you have a budget and a business account on Instagram, we highly recommend using Instagram ads as a way to gain new followers.

22. Geolocation Targeting

Using geolocation targeting, you can identify followers relevant to your niche in a specific area. If you happen to run a brick-and-mortar business, this is an excellent way to gain the attention of local clientele.

23. Offline Marketing

Take your promotional efforts offline and promote your Instagram account using physical products, such as branded stickers or flyers. If you happen to have your own hashtag that you’d like to promote, use these physical products as a way to generate greater interest and excitement from people about your accounts.

24. Fan Pages

Create fan pages and use them to drive your supporters to your business pages. Instagram now allows you to operate multiple accounts through its app, so take advantage of this and create an additional account dedicated to supporting your main account. Use it as a way to experiment with different strategies and connect with other influencers.

25. Thunderclap Strategy

Organize a “thunderclap” and get multiple accounts to share your post at the same time. It’s a fantastic strategy to increase traffic to your account, especially if you want to sell a product. A shoutout not from one, but from multiple influencers in your industry will ensure that your content reaches several thousand potential Instagram followers.

Pro Tip: Adapt the “thunderclap” strategy to the comments section. Instagram rewards content that sparks a conversation in the comments with followers.

26. Know Your Psychographic Data

Fully understand your followers, not just through demographics but also through psychographic data. Think of demographics as the black and white outlines in a picture and psychographic data as the colors. Psychographics seeks to analyze your customers’ interests and hobbies, their lifestyle and the way they like to spend their time. It includes their characteristics, values, and beliefs. When it comes to data, psychographics represents the qualitative side of understanding individuals.
